If you ever hear the someone mentioning ciprofloxacin, gemifloxacin, levofloxacin, moxifloxacin, norfloxacin and ofloxacin, you better not reach for any of these. These are the names of 6 dangerous antibiotics and according to the US Food and Drug Administration (US FDA), they can cause permanent nerve damages.
Whether used orally or as an injection, these antibiotics can cause permanent damage such as peripheral neuropathy, damage to the peripheral nervous system, including the nerves on your hands and feet, accompanied with symptons of pain, thingling, weakness, numbness, high body temperature and either reduced or extreme sensitivity to touch.
These antibiotics can not only damage the nerves, but also the tendons and other organs, such as kidneys and eyes. One of these antibiotics is the subject of numerous lawsuits by patients who used it and experienced severe side-effects.
It is believed that these antibiotics, also known as fluoroquinolones, are especially dangerous for children younger than 18, pregnant women, people older than 60, diabetics, and people who have problems with the liver.
