Grilling your meat may actually increase your risk of cancer. Consumers typically turn to the backyard grill when the weather gets warm to provide a tasty way to cook dinner. However, those flames and the high heat may actually be a catalyst for cancer-causing compounds to be present in the meat, which you then consume.

Levels As Yet Unknown
The good news is that you don’t have to get rid of your grill yet. While studies have shown a connection between the grill and cancer compounds in meat, there is no set amount yet known that you have to eat in order to guarantee you will get cancer.
That means you are free to keep eating grilled meats, although you may want to consider moderating the amount of dinners you make on the grill during the warm summer months.
Cancer-Causing Compounds to be Aware Of
The compounds that are caused by cooking meat at high temperatures are HCAs, or heterocyclic amines, and PAHs or polycylic aromatic hydrocarbons. The HCAs are created from the combination of high heat and amino acids, sugars and compounds in meat that are caused to change chemically. Meanwhile, PAHs are a result of flames and smoke and can be found adhered to the outside of the cooked meat.

For two, the human body processes things at a different rate than an animal and is bigger, so it would be harder to determine how much of the two compounds are actually being retained by the human body without some type of test that involves a human. Instead, scientists rely on self reporting data, which can be slightly inaccurate since no one tells the complete truth in regards to their diet or the amount of certain foods they eat when they might be bad for you.
In a study of over 60,000 people completed by the University of Minnesota School of Public Health, 208 people were diagnosed with pancreatic cancer during the term of the study, which was nine years. Of those people studied, those who ate meat cooked at high temperatures the most had an increased risk of pancreatic, colorectal and prostate cancers. Those who ate the least had the oppoiste level of potential to be diagnosed with these cancers.
Therefore, the correlation can be seen as present for humans as well. Yet, it is hard if not impossible to determine the amount of grilled meat you would need to consume to raise your risk of cancer. People need to be aware of the possibility and moderate their consumption of grilled meats, balancing them with healthier cooking alternatives.
