A recent survey has found that three glasses of wine serve as the tipping point after which it is difficult for people to stop themselves from binge drinking and binge eating. Four pints of beer can have the same effect on a person as well leading to people consuming up to 6,300 extra alories in alcohol and food.
Furthermore, half of those who passed their tipping point in this survey by YouGov cancelled exercise and sport the following day choosing to sit in front of the television or stay in bed and eat more - exacerbating their potential for weight gain. And in that lies the secondary major problem.
It is easy to forget the the effects of excess drinking aren't just due to the alcohol in the system, it is also in what it makes you do. Excess drinking can lead you to eating a lot more and exercising a lot less. Had those drinkers not eaten more, they wouldn't have consumed the extra calories. Chips, pizzas, kebabs and hamburgers were the most commonly eaten foods.
Dr. Jacquie Lavin, head of nutrition and research at Slimming World, said alcohol loosened self-control. She said people who had consumed more alcohol tended to eat at a greater rate and for longer. "Alcohol makes the food even more rewarding. It tastes good and feels even better than it would do normally," said Dr Lavin.
The research specifically found that after 9.3 units of alcohol, participants made unhealthy choices namely consuming an extra 4,305 calories in food and drink that night and another 2,000 the next morning.
