Juice vs Smoothie: Which One is Healthier?

There has been a lot of debate about the health benefits between juice and smoothie. Though there are pros and cons to each drink, it really comes down to your personal needs and goals.

Here is a short comparison that may help you choose which among these two fits your lifestyle.


Juicing is a process which extracts water and nutrients from produce and discard the indigestible fiber. Without all the fiber, your digestive system doesn’t have to work as hard as to break down the food. The advantage of this drink is that it makes the nutrients more readily available for the body to absorb in much larger quantities and quickly than if you were to eat fruits and vegetables whole.

If you have a sensitive digestive system or illness that inhibits your body for processing fiber then this is the drink for you. The fiber in produce helps slow down the digestive process and provides a steady release of nutrients into the blood stream. Now that’s “a nutrient express!” as Jason Vale calls it.

A word of caution:

When you remove the fiber from the produce, the liquid juice is absorbed into your blood stream quickly. If you are only juicing fruits, this would cause a rapid spike in blood sugar.

Without fiber, some people tend to get hungry again quickly.

Smoothies / Blending

Unlike juices, smoothies consist of the entire fruit or vegetables, skin and fibers, even the seeds if necessary. In short, smoothies generally blend the whole food, keeping all the nutrients from the fruits and vegetables intact. However, this process breaks the fiber apart for easier digestion, but also helps create a slow, even release of nutrients into the bloodstream and avoid blood sugar spikes. Smoothies also tend to be more filling because of the fiber and generally faster to make than juice. Therefor, they can be great drink first thing in the morning as your breakfast, or for snacks throughout the day.
