The Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine published a new clinical trial according to which there is an effective natural alternative to ibuprofen, known as an exceedingly popular pharmaceutical painkiller, when it comes to treating knee osteoarthritis (OA).
This familiar kitchen spice has shown to be a lot more superior in safety to any drug in the class of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory (NSAID) drugs. The same applies to the number of side-effects conventional drugs have.
Turmeric versus Ibuprofen
The clinical trial published in the aforementioned journal involved 109 patients with knee arthritis who were randomly divided into two groups. The first group received 800mg of ubuprofen, and the other group of participants was given 2,000mg of turmeric.
Patients received divided doses daily for six weeks. Patients did level walking and went up a flight of stairs. Researchers evaluated the pain patients experienced and the time they spent in doing both activities.
Turmeric is much safer than Ibuprofen
According to WebMD, ibuprofen has many adverse affects, including severe complications like stroke and heart attack. Stomach ache, rash, dizziness, heartburn and nausea were listed as the most common effects.
Moreover, the publication listed 14 infrequent adverse effects and 84 rare side-effects. Many of these are quite serious, involving kidney failure and fatal bleeding from abdominal area.
WebMD reported that turmeric, on the other hand, is safe for most individuals. Of course, only when taken in doses lower than 3,000mg/day. In normal conditions turmeric causes no adverse effects, but some patients may experience stomach upset, dizziness and diarrhea.
Experts do not recommend it to patients with gall bladder disease, gastrointestinal reflux disease or individuals who are on a surgery schedule within two weeks.
