It can be caused by low temperature, repetitive stress injury or for holding a certain position for a long time.
However, serious problems such as nutritional deficiencies, anxiety, diabetes, multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, Raynaud’s syndrome, herpes zoster, etc can also cause it.
Immediate medical assistance is advised if it stays long or accompanied by weakness, involuntary movements of the hands, vision changes, slurred speech and loss of bowel or urinary bladder control.
There are certain natural remedies that could alleviate numbness but not necessarily treat it.
1. Perform Relaxation
It is advisable to relax if the obvious reason behind your numbness is worrying or being nervous. Relaxation techniques like taking slow deep breaths, doing yoga, listening to soothing music, writing in your journal are all effective.
2. Control Blood Sugar Levels
Diabetes is one of the probable cause of numbness. Keep your blood sugar levels within the normal range.
3. Soak it on Warm Water
Immerse your hand in a bowl of warm water can also help alleviate numbness in the fingers.
4. Have the Hand Massaged
It may be caused by sudden disruption on blood flow that's why you have to have it massaged. Add few drops of eucalyptus, coriander, ginger, rosemary or cypress essential oil to your massage oil as it can boost circulation.
5. Rely on Certain Herbs
Cayenne and turmeric are very good at promoting blood circulation. Ginkgo biloba, sage and rosemary are also used in some cases.
6. Take Foods Rich in Vitamin B12
Make sure that your everyday diet consists of foods with vitamin B12 for it is good for the nerves. Foods like fish, shellfish, red meat, liver, eggs, and cheese are fortified with it.
7. Quit Smoking and Drinking
Cigarette smoking can damage the blood vessels and impede circulation. On the other hand, too much alcohol can have damaging effects to the nerves. Stopping these exercises could ease the numbness you feel.
